Matt Lewis and Renato Poliafito, friends and co-founder of Baked NYC Granola, bit off a little more than they could chew when starting their company. Like all great entrepreneurs, they pursued their dreams at all costs even though there were many speed bumps such as lack of funding, New York City food service and zoning applications, and no real written formal business plan. Despite these many roadblocks Matt and Renato marched forth with their small team and a few good recipes. Their bank accounts were running low but thankfully their passion and ambition prevailed. Baked finally came to fruition in January 2005 in the neighborhood of Red Hook, Brooklyn.

Matt and Renato really love and have a passion for dessert and baked goods. They enjoy both the eating and making of desserts as well as what they call the “archaeology of dessert.” They love travelling the world and exploring the desserts of different places and trying to conjoin them, replicate them, and get inspiration for new recipes. The guys spend most of their vacation time in bakeries, candy shops, and chocolate shops and spend most of their disposable incomes on cake, cookies, chocolate, and wine. They are truly passionate about dessert and baked goods.

Before professionally pursuing baking and coffee, Matt and Renato were simply baked goods and coffee enthusiasts as a hobby. Renato was taught everything he knows from his mother and Matt learned from a mixture of his grandmother, his mother, and night classes. Matt and Renato spent the majority of their professional lives in the world of advertising. Matt was a producer and spent most of his day in a small cubical. Renato was in the field of graphic design making things look nice and pretty. The two came together ad an ad agency where the idea for Baked NYC Granola and Bakery was born.

Baked is a classic American style bakery and cafe based in Red hook, Brooklyn. Baked specializes in all manner of American baking and desserts such as cookies, pies, tarts, muffins, scones, bars, and brownies. The real all star of the Baked lineup is their brownies recommended even by Oprah. Everything is handmade fresh, on site in Brooklyn daily. Baked is not only a local gem, but a national known bakery. Baked has been featured on the Today Show, the Food Network, and the Martha Stewart Show.
