The McClure family has been making pickles for generations, and it is quite the tasty family tradition! Joe and Bob McClure, brothers, and co-founders of McClures Pickles, founded the company in 2006 with their great grandmother Lala’s secret recipe. The art of pickling had been passed down to Joe and Bob from their grandparents, to their parents, and then finally to them. These brothers grew up in Michigan making batches of pickles in their small kitchen with the rest of their family. Joe and Bob say that they remember as children going to the Detroit Eastern Market on a summer day with their parents and grandparents,, and getting enough cucumbers to make about 150 jars of pickles or so for the coming year. It was only natural that Joe and Bob use their lifetime or artisan pickling to build McClures pickles and share their family’s love of pickles with the rest of the world. As Joe and Bob like to say, they are simply continuing their small time family tradition but with a little bit more room in their kitchen.
McClures makes their pickles, relish, bloody mary mix, and the rest of their products in Detroit Michigan, where Joe and Bob grew up and currently live. The McClures marketing, sales, and order management office is located in Brooklyn where Bob lived for a while as he pursued a career in acting. Growing up Joe and Bob viewed their family tradition of pickling as somewhat of a chore opposed to an important family tradition. When they grew up they pursued careers in other areas before it occurred to them to make a living doing what they do best. Bob was an aspiring actor living in Brooklyn and Joe had a doctorate in physiology and lived in Detroit, Michigan. Joe is also a very talented classical musician. One day Bob brought a batch of his homemade spicy pickles to a casting party and everyone was raving about them, telling Bob he should go into business with his pickles. As an actor and a freelance artist Bob wanted a job with stability so he called up his brother Jim and pitched the idea to him. It didn’t take much convincing for Bob to come on board and McClures Pickles was born in 2006.
Joe and Bob aim to only use local and source identifiable produce, cucumbers, to make their pickles and other products. They always make sure to visit the farms and find out how the produce is being grown so that they know they are getting the best quality and freshest produce they can. McClures products are all-natural, gluten-free, and Kosher certified. Every Jar of McClures Pickles is hand packed by Joe, Bob, or one of their talented team members. Two other very important team members of the McClures Pickle’s team are Mike and Jennifer, Joe and Bob’s Mom and Dad. Jennifer started making pickles and jarring her products at the young age of five. In 1971, Jennifer won first place in the Michigan State fair for her amazing corn relish. She jokes that the reason Mike married her was for the pickle recipe. Jennifer is also a licensed massage therapist and has a loyal clientele in the Detroit area. Mike worked in the retail grocery industry for twenty-five years. Mike and Jennifer have been jarring their family’s artisan pickles for over thirty years. Since 2006 Joe, Bob, Mike, and Jennifer have been continuing their family tradition and jarring their family recipe and sharing their family’s delicious pickles with the rest of the world.
