In 1920, my Great Grandfather Louis Winzelberg immigrated to the United States from Tarnow, Poland with his wife Freida. Trying to escape the rapid growing persecution of Jews, they came to New York City through Ellis Island in hopes of pursuing a better life; the American dream. They settled down at 7024 15th Avenue in Brooklyn, NY where they bought a single-family apartment and the retail storefront below. Like many Jewish Immigrants in New York City, Louis had family ties to the grocery industry, so he used the retail storefront to open Winzelberg Specialty Groceries in late 1920, a gourmet Italian specialty food store. A strong dedication to hospitality, customer service, and quality products, made both Louis and his market a success. Winzelberg Specialty Groceries remained open for over 40 years until Louis's death and the selling of the building on October 1, 1961. Almost sixty years later, the Winzelberg family is returning to our roots with the opening of Winz Market.
